Fire Blazes After Explosion Near San Francisco [Photos]
Shortly after 6pm on Thursday September 9th, a plume of smoke rose skyward from a hillside in San Bruno near the 280 & 380 highways. Enormous flames fed by coastal winds quickly turned the cloud into a smokestack which was visible for miles across the Bay Area. Flames 20 meters high engulfed a residential neighborhood on Skyline Blvd in San Bruno, CA (caused by a gas line explosion at last report) while fire crews from surrounding districts fought the 5-alarm blaze from every angle. The radio news broadcasts mentioned an explosion, but word on the street is that it occurred at a gas station on Skyline Blvd in San Bruno. [Not too far from the real story as it turned out...]
Meanwhile, avoid the 280 and 380 highways if possible, as traffic is gridlocked and fire crews are blocking roads.
Some say they saw an airplane go down before the fire started, but no planes are missing from the surrounding airports according to an article on the San Francisco Chronicle’s website (SFGate.com).
UPDATES:
SFGate and the LA Times are both reporting that the fire was caused by a gas line explosion in a residential neighborhood and that highway 280 is now closed. SFGate reports:
Blaze caused by the explosion has destroyed more than a dozen homes in the residential area. Interstate 280 near the fire area is closed.
