Journalists and the freedom of the press are protected in many states by shield laws. However, there is not yet a federal shield law. Reporters have been subpoenaed by a federal Grand Jury to reveal their sources and turn over their notes or face time in prison for simply doing their job. The public suffers most when journalists are punished for doing their jobs.
